Even in pre-production, UK spec, the MG 4 hatch proves the long wait for a good, affordable electric car may well be over.

June 2023: MG 4 entry variant priced below $40,000

MG Australia has confirmed its MG 4 electric hatch lineup will include a base 51kWh variant at launch.

It is priced from $38,990 before on-road costs, making the MG 4 the cheapest battery-powered passenger car sold in Australia to date – provided it isn't undercut by its BYD Dolphin rival later this week.

The brand said orders will commence on July 1, before the first deliveries expected in mid-August.

Under the skin, the MG 4 is based on MG's modular scalable platform (MSP), with support for 150kW DC fast charging, allowing for a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in 28 minutes.

All variants are rear-wheel drive – matching the Tesla Model 3 and Cupra Born – with a claimed 50:50 weight distribution.

The MG 4 will rival the GWM Ora, BYD Atto 3 and MG's own ZS EV, in addition to the dearer Cupra Born and forthcoming Volkswagen ID.3 electric hatchbacks.

In the MG 4, public fast-charging reaches 150kW DC for a 10-80 per cent top-up in 28 minutes, while AC charging is capped at 7.4kW for a seven-hour and 15-minute 0-100 per cent charge.
