"Electric vehicles aren’t affordable."
Snapshot
- 50+ EV models from 24+ brands available (or soon to be) in Australia
- Cheapest EVs start from $40K, most centre in $60K-$90K range
- Batteries make EVs pricier, but some have already achieved 'price parity'
The price to buy an electric vehicle remains the go-to complaint and barrier to electric car adoption, understandably. But, times are changing.
While new car ‘affordability’ depends on your personal circumstances, there is a growing list of new lower-cost EVs entering Australia that have increased competition and buyer choice.
But what electric models are available and how much do they cost to buy?

- 🤔 Time to make the electric switch?

⚡️ How much do new EVs cost?
The cheapest new EV in Australia starts from around $40K drive-away – but most models centre in the $60,000 to $90,000 range.
Some state governments offer limited rebates and incentives to further lower the price tag, while the federal government has exempted the fringe benefits tax (FBT) for select electric models on company novated leases and business fleets to cut running costs.
Generally, for the price range of a popular petrol- or diesel-powered 4x4 ute or a medium family SUV today, buyers can comfortably get into most EVs from a size class below or different body type segment.
In the case of some Chinese-made EV models – such as the BYD Dolphin, MG 4 hatch and Tesla Model 3 sedan – their price tags closely match their petrol or diesel engined rivals, if not even cheaper.
💸 Why are EVs generally pricier than ICE?
Blame the battery.
Expensive and resource-limited materials are required to form large battery packs, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese.
However, new battery developments, such as the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathode, are bringing down costs and addressing contentious environmental sustainability issues.
As more Australians and fleets make the electric switch, those models will eventually flow on to create a larger and more accessible used EV market.
While electric cars are generally not ‘cheap’, reduced total ownership costs – including cheaper charging costs and less demanding maintenance – mean the price premium (if at all) will be recouped over time as you own the vehicle longer and drive further.
Of course, there are other factors to consider such as how much driving range you really need, the ability (or lack thereof) to ideally charge at home, and typically pricier insurance premiums – so a pure EV may not be right for you depending on your commuting requirements (at least for now).
